Windows 7 Whopper

On a side note, I’m kinda glad I didn’t waste my precious time to even try Vista for all this while. I’ve been sticking with XP all along. Waiting, waiting and waiting. Until…

Finally last Friday, something much2 better than Vista has arrived (err, this is purely based on what I read on the Net) . Cubanya belum lagi. Welcome Windows 7.

Collective Intelligence…

October 17, 2009 · Leave a Comment

I first came across the term Collective Intelligence while I was researching for some info on knowledge management a couple of months back.

Well, it was actually more like updating and hardening my studies’ proposal for next year HLP’s interview really. You can never tell what  ‘GAGAL’ or ‘PERMOHONAN ANDA TIDAK BERJAYA’  can mean/do to somebody unless you’re the one on the receiving end, huhu…

Nway, back to our topic for today. Collective intelligence is defined as a shared or group intelligence that emerges from the collaboration and competition of many individuals.

Best working example of it will be Wikipedia. I know, some of us are still reluctant to use/cite content from Wiki due to its open-for-all policy.

But in a few years to come, I’m sure it all will change. Why? Due to collective intelligence of course, wisdom of the community. It’ll mature in time…

Errr fyi, Microsoft Encarta akan tutup kedai tak lama lagi starting 31/10/2009. I’m suspecting it must have something to do with Wiki’s 3 million articles 8)

Roger, Bob, Cheryl…

Nama2 kat atas tu, semuanya prof2 sy masa di RPI dulu. Very knowledgeable and of course, needless to say, well-respected in their fields.

But wait a sec? What’s up with the 1st name thingy?

Memang gitu style diaorang. They insist on people calling them by their 1st name. Berapa kali sy kena tegur during the 1st week of classes bila sy asyik guna gelaran Prof. or Dr. di depan nama diaorang.

“Prof, can I talk to you for a second?”

“Hizar, just call me Roger. Please, I insist.”

Ish, takkan kot? Terasa macam ada yang tak kena jer…

Rupanya memang gitu cara diaorang. Terkena kejutan budaya kejap. Diaorang tak kisah lansung. Kalau depa tulis nama atas attendance sheet/borang, tak pun diletaknya pangkat Dr. etc. Kat business kad pun sama. Nama jer. Dr tak ada, PhD dari mana pun tak ada…

Keterlanjuran tak berapa lama sy kat sana, sy perasan something. Sy yang tak pernah2 rapat dengan cikgu /lecturer sebelum ni, tetiba je boleh berborak sakan dgn my profs. Boleh duduk minum kopi dengan diaorang dlm sejam dua tanpa rasa tertekan ;) .

Cerita pasal road trip, pasal famili, pasal Malaysia etc. Terasa dekat ngan dioarang. Macam berborak ngan member2. Cam ada satu chemistry jer ngan diaraong. Rasa2 nya ada kaitan gak ngan 1st name basis ni…

But bear in mind k, rasa hormat kat diaorang tak pernah berkurang. Makin bertambah ada la. Masing2 humble gitu. Kalau berjalan boleh seiring ngan students, kalau makan boleh semeja…

It really (1000x) made my stay at RPI a memorable one :D . Special thanks to my profs.

You guys ROCK!

RM3…

October 13, 2009 · 6 Comments

“Cik Receptionist, wifi ada tak?” dengan sopan sekali soklan diutarakan.

“Ada En, RM3 sehari”, balas Cik Receptionist yang dah tentu lagi bersopan santun. Kalau tak, harus sy panggil manager, huhu…

RM3 untuk 24 jam of 2Mbps, quite decent kan? Sy tengah berbengkel ni di Residence UniTen sampai Khamis nanti. Cam biasalah, tulah soklan pertama yang wajib ditanya bila nak check in masuk bilik.

I know nowadays, some of us are treating broadband as makanan ruji, dah diconsider sebagai basic necessity gitu2. Termasuk ngan saya. Tak leh online kejap, dah gelabah.

Nway, cerita pasal wifi and broadband ni, looking back at some of hotels which I’ve been b4, kekadang ada yang FOC, ada yang berbayar. Pernah satu hotel kat Genting, diaorang sediakan 4Mbps and it’s FREE! Awesome.

Tapi kebiasaannya, yang free selalu bleh dapat 1Mbps. Yang berbayar cam kat Residence ni, RM3 untuk 2 Mbps kira okay for me. Tak la mahal sesangat, even though kena bayar. Affordable gitu…

Pernah masa kami road trip kat Boston dulu, sy kena bayar $5 for 24 hours. Negara maju tu bro…

Fast Flip…

October 7, 2009 · Leave a Comment

Untitled-1

Like seriously, the good people of Google will never stop to amaze me.

Google Fast Flip, the latest addition to their wonderful array of  web apps, is an app which let us to quickly scan/browse several sites at one go. Wait, here comes the best part.

We can ‘flip’ thru them like what we usually experience with offline newspapers & mags. We can even customize the content. On the fly. Brilliant!

Errr, yes I know. Offline? Doesn’t it mean printed copies, Ayien? Yeah, whateva :) .

Btw, I kinda realised something. Just recently though. Wheneva I’m watching CNN on tv and terperasan those running news headlines at the bottom of the screen tu that interest me, my brain will compute (slowly, huhu) and later on will instruct my right hand (to be exact, my index finger) to do something, which is,

“Click on the headline. I want to read the details. Go on, click. NOW!”

Yes, I guess I have issues.

*Must spend less time on the Net  8)

Nway, berbalik kepada cerita kita tadi. Google Flip is just awesome dude. Very intuitive. I LIKE! User experience at its best!

It’s Rio for 2016…

October 4, 2009 · Leave a Comment

It’ll be Rio De Janeiro to host the 2016 Olympics. Congratulations to them. They deserved it through and through…

If you want to know what this meant to them, just read what their President got to say about this landmark decision…

“I’ve never won a gift before,” Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva told reporters. “The first gift I ever had in my life I had to buy. It was an old bike with a broken belt and I had to fix it. Today, people who don’t even know me gave me the greatest gift that a president could have: to host the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. Rio deserves this because Rio is a city that has suffered.”
