What? Me becoming an extrovert?

I was rather skeptical when somebody I’m know quite well noted that once I’m here in the States, eventually I’ll becoming more talkative and outgoing. In other word, an extrovert. Boy, was I really skeptical back then. Coming from an exam-oriented education’s background, it’s not hard to tell why. Throughout the years, I prefer to spend my time doing my own things with little or minimal interaction from others.

Now, after 14 months here, not surprisingly, he’s right! Awat jadi lagu tu Ayien? One of the reasons, I believed is because of the way the well-structured education-style over here. I’ll give one good example. During one of my classes in my first semester over here, the professor told the class that 25% of the overall marks came from class participation. What? You have to speak in order to get points? Well, that’s new to me. Even during my undergrad’s years in Salford tak ada pun mention pasal this thing.

Memula terkena juga cultural shock. Bukan sedikit, tapi banyak. Seingat saya tak ada students yang tertunduk2 ke bawah pretending to be busy or looking for something😉 when the professor bertanyakan soalan except of course adalah this one particular person.

One good thing kat sini, there is no right or wrong when it comes to giving your opinions .Semacam ada sytem check and balance kat sini. Nobody is going to laugh or make fun at you even though your arguments maybe off-track. Baguskan? Sudahlah ianya mengajar students menjadi lebih kreatif dan berpandangan jauh, it helps to build up your self confident. Cool eh?

Now I know why whenever I see all these Americans talk to each others, they seem so confident with themselves. Remember the proverb, ‘The Nail That Sticks Up, Gets Hammered Down’? It’s the opposite over here. If your are the nail that sticks up, you shall expect success in years to come…

  1. saya mengajar kat uum. Students sini, menunduk aje bila time saya menanya pendapat atau soklan. Bukannya kita nak marah pun kalau salah. Tapi saya dulu2 masa study, gitu gak. Takutttt manjang nak menjawab, hehehe

  2. Diaorang selalu ada group projects, discussions etc. Pastu tu during/at the end of the class or time period given, ada presentation.

Dari grade 1 lagi diaorang dah start gini, that’s why it’s like a norm for them to express themselves in front of others, tak ada takut2 or pressure.

Satu lagi, diaorang bukan terpaksa untuk bercakap, memang diaorang nak bercakap. They know their rights, everybody have their own opinions. Rasanya dalam kelas tu, sy banyak belajar bila diaorang berdiskus sesama sendiri/dengan prof. Tau2, kelas dah abis😀 … Memang lively…
