Menulis…

During the spring of 2007, I took a class on Science Writing as part of the requirements for my MSc. Ni kira kes paksa-rela la. If I was given a chance at that time, memang tak akan pandang sebelah mata langsung subjek ni, huhu…

The reason being, the class was all about writing and reading which I have to admit not my cup of tea (it’s technical not creative writing, mind you – which basically made it much more interesting).

But as they often say, to conquer your weakness or fear is to confront it, macam anak  jantan. So I did 8) .

Needless to say, I was struggling at first, seriesly . Terasa macam nak drop the class pun ada :(. But with the continuous help and advice from Prof Odell, after a few weeks, I managed to get hold of myself and starting to enjoy the class more and more.

Little did I know a few years later, the decision for not dropping the class was probably one of the wise decisions I ever made in life. After listening to 3 days of lectures at INTAN, I began to understand how important it is to hone your writing skills in order to produce a 1st class thesis.

And suddenly, all the hard work and countless nights of staying up to write 1,000-word of article on weekly basis during that spring is somehow looking not bad, not bad at all 🙂 …

INTAN: Day 4 & 5…

Activity of the day(s): What is Research?

The guest speaker for Day 4 & 5 was Prof. Dr Yuserrie Zainuddin from UMP. Previously he was at USM before heading to Pahang a year back. His lectures focused  on the basic question of what is research and activities that are associated with it.

Prior to this, I was kind in the dark of what research is all about. After listening to his well-delivered and informative lecture, I can now differentiate between research problem, research questions and research objectives…

What I like the most about today’s lecture was Prof. Yuserrie would share with us a few of real-life stories about his students (current and past) experiences with PhD and VIVA.

Like how one of his students managed to defense his proposal within 6 months of starting Phd instead of the average 12 months. To achieved that, we were told he spent 23 hours a day for literature review!

Really an eye-opener, I’m telling you. He also kept on reminding us the fact that PhD is a lonely journey and to get thru it, you need aspiration (lots of it) and of course perseverance & dicipline.

Although he provided his lectures’ notes in hardcopy, I prefer to jot down the key points on paper (in mind map form). I found it by doing this it’ll  be much more easier for me to understand and remember them…

INTAN: Day 2 & 3…

Activity of the day(s): Reading & Writing Skills

The second day started off with the presence of 2 familiar faces in the class. Prof Reading aka Dr Razak Dali and his wife, Pn Sharipah were there 8) – which could only mean one thing, lectures on how to read and write – the correct and proper way awaited us :).

I first met both them during my QA4 for my preparation for MSc 4 years back. If I’m not mistaken, Dr Razak was the first person in Malaysia to obtain a D.Ed In Reading (perhaps he is still the only one).

Since I already attended his lectures before this, I kinda  got some ideas what he’ll be presenting to the class. Like before, he started his lecture by throwing out a few questions to the class (his trademark 😀 ); apa itu banding dan beza? apakah itu falsafah, teori etc? Habis semua nama kena panggil, huhu…

The one thing that I still remember during his lecture in 2006 was his point on how in postgrad studies, 70% reading comes from journals and articles while the rest from books. True enough, that was what exactly he reminded the class later that morning.

However, when he told the class that for those who are going to pursue their studies locally, we might be having some issues with access to journals since some of the unis may not subscribe to most of them unlike overseas (due to budget etc), tetiba terasa kelam sekejap, huhu….

Hmmm, hopefully my new found colleagues who are heading to UK can assist us on this…

Once in a while during his lectures, he would stop for a few mins to share with us his experience of studying at University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign – on how he loved to travel during the summer and the sight of the golden leaves that fell on the ground during fall season. Detik tu, tetiba jer teringat Troy, huhu…

During the summer of 2007, I had the chance to travel to NIU – Northern Illinois University for Midwest 2007 – the annual sporting event held annually by the Malaysian students in USA.

I managed t0 spend a few hours at Chicago during the trip and boy, what a city it was. The Windy City as it is widely recognised, is located near Lake Michigan. Memang sejuk. And the best part, you can get HALAL KFC kat situ 😀

INTAN: Day 1…

Activity of the day: Orientation

Nothing much happened on Day 1. As expected, the 1st day was reserved for some introduction for what to expect in the upcoming 6 weeks. And of course, the usual ice-breaking session…

During registration that morning at Seri Mutiara 2 & 3, we have to pay the course fee (very2 minimal). Was informed it can be claimed later from the opis.

Nonetheless, I am more than willing to pay for it. Just imagine for that amount of money, you’ll be getting some profs., drs., and experts to come in and give lectures and advice to you. Plus they provide lunch as well. Kalau tak boleh claim pun, I don’t mind 🙂

The best part, it was the same room I attended during my previous QA at INTAN back in 2006. Just like before, I picked a set a few rows from the front – right next to the window :D. We were seated in classroom style, 3 in each row seperated by 2 aisles…

Music Angel…

CD player merangkap FM.

Rupanya kualiti pun sama gak mcm Cik H***r. Radio tak clear, sama jer. Letak kat kitchen, pasang bila memasak (maggi selalunya) …

Akhirnya, selepas puas menanti dan mencari2, terjumpa dengan Cik Music Angel ni masa tengah menyopping (post-EidFitri) di Plaza Massalam. Masa memula terdengar, terkejut dan terkompius kjp.

Kecil bebenar, tp performance mantap. Sound kira okey (ada la ilmu skit2. Dulu masa kat Salford, selalu ikut Sr. Hilmi ngan Tn Eris pi Bill Hutchinson, test drive Marantz, Wharfedale, B&W, huhu…)

For RM70, I would recommend this player for those who are looking for a compact and portable (literally) music player. The sound is crisp and clear, FM reception is amazingly SUPER and the battery life is WONDERFUL…

Avillion, PD…

The weekend quick getaway…

No Oly this time around, tak daya nak usung merata. Canon should be enuf. Apa2 pun, laptop tetap kena bawak…

Bukit Kiara…

HLP 2011. Here we go. The point of no return…

Starting next week, I’ll be attending a 6-week ‘Kursus Persediaan Ijazah Kedoktoran (Ph.D) bagi Hadiah Latihan Persekutuan 2011’ @ INTAN, Bukit Kiara as part of the prerequisites as stated in the JPA’s temp. offer letter .

It’s called temporary offer letter because the candidates must first fulfill certain things before being issued with a confirmed offer letter such as to attend and pass the 6-week preparation course and received at least one offer letter from university yg menjadi pujaan hati.

For overseas candidates, on top of the above, they have to attend and pass the 4D 5N BTN course and related language test eg TOEFL or IELTS.

Basically, this course is intended to prepare the students for research works and related stuffs which among others includes modules such as research methodology, statistics and SPSS. Good stuff!

I seriously thought the course will be held somewhere early next year, NOT right away after Eid Fitri’s hols. Kelam kabut kejap kat opis minggu ni. Mana yang tak sempat nampak gaya kena delegate le jawabnya.

Walaumacamanapun, kira okey gak ler, kursus kali ni 6 minggu jer. Sebelum ni, mcm tahun2 lepas, kurang lebih 3 bulan. Lagi haru beb…

Anyway, for those of you who never been to INTAN’s Bukit Kiara before, apart from the lecture halls and the facilities they provided over there, they also have hostels @ twin-sharing room. But since the rooms are quite limited, they are only available for students who are staying outside the Klang Valley.

Thus, kira cam masuk ofis gak la ni, huhu…  Still WP1. Cumanya masa tinggal kat kuarters Jln Duta circa ’06 dulu, boleh la balik rumah masa break tengahari. Kali ni nampak gaya, kena crash mana2 bilik coursemate la sementara nak menunggu kelas mula balik petang nanti…

Errr btw, I’m thinking of blogging on the activities covered during the course – on daily basis. Should be interesting, looking forward to it…

Rasa2 macam nak tulis buku pun ada pasal my journey ni. Dah berjangkit drpd cik novelis tu…
